A CHARITY supporting adults and children with learning disabilities received a £1,000 donation to improve its club room this week.

Mencap Reading's much-loved communal hub underwent a significant facelift, including two new sofas and paint, after Rockwell Collins handed over the generous sum.

Adults and children with a learning disability use the room at the Alexandra Road headquarters throughout the week for a variety of clubs and activities.

The club room is a vital tool for Mencap in providing people with social opportunities and the chance to learn new skills, as well as the opportunity to make friends and give their families a break from caring.

Marie-Claire Dillon, fundraising manager for Mencap, said: “The club room is now looking fresh and bright and the new sofas will be a very welcome addition.

“As a local charity we are most appreciative to staff from Rockwell Collins who have nominated us for support and who have given up their time to come and help us.

“Their efforts have made a real difference to the people who use our services.”

The club room is used four days a week for a popular day activity service for adults called 'Mencap Enables', a vital service for increasing the confidence and independence among adults who are at risk of isolation.

Marianne Vaisset, from Rockwell Collins, added: “We have been very impressed with the work Reading Mencap does with adults and children and we are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile local charity.”
