A CYCLIST has died after colliding with a pedestrian in Earley on Monday evening, it emerged today.

The 26-year-old man sustained serious head injuries after turning onto Church Road from Wokingham Road, before striking a 29-year-old man.

It is believed the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

Officers from Thames Valley Police cordoned off the scene with blue and white tape at around 7.30pm and issued a roadblock for several hours, as the cyclist was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Police revealed today the cyclist sadly died as a result of fatal head injuries.

A police spokesman, said: "A cyclist, a 26-year-old man, was cycling from Wokingham Road and turned into Church Road, where he collided with a 29-year-old male pedestrian.

"The cyclist sustained serious head injuries and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment, however he sadly died yesterday."

Witnesses watched in horror as paramedics and air ambulance crews treated the two men at the scene following the collision.

A bystander who spoke with police at the scene added: "A cyclist with no helmet came around the corner at high speed and hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road."

The 29-year-old pedestrian was hit whilst crossing the road and afterwards taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital with minor injuries.

The cyclist was flown to The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he died at 7.30pm yesterday (Thursday).

Officers continued to appeal for witnesses today.

Police Constable Wayne Reece of the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing said: “This incident has very sadly resulted in a man losing his life and I am appealing for information from anyone who saw this happen or who has any information relating to it.

“If anyone has any details which they think could help our investigation, please call the Thames Valley Police non-emergency number on 101.”
