This week we asked our jury members whether they think MPs should be able to work two or more jobs, in light of George Osborne being instated editor of the Evening Standard.

What do you think? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.

Thea Jacobs

Reading Chronicle:

No because they should focus on their constituency rather than having conflicts of interests in second jobs, such as George Osborne becoming editor at the Evening Standard. Having multiple jobs will affect their quality of work in all areas.

Bina Donald

Reading Chronicle:

I guess it depends. Two full time jobs, no. But there are lots of ways to earn extra income and I wouldn't be opposed to MPs having a side hustle, like writing a book. Or basically projects they can work on in their spare time.

Charlotte Bernard

Reading Chronicle:

No I don't think MPs should take on second jobs, because at some point it will cause a conflict of interest. Having a second job would also mean your heart's not really in being an MP. So do one or the other.

Ben Peters

Reading Chronicle:

I would like to see more MPs joining voluntary groups or just giving a helping hand in their local communities. Not just for a quick snapshot for the local paper, but to show their community they really care.

Kamal Saleem

Reading Chronicle:

Historically MPs haven't opted for a second job, as I'm sure it takes up a majority of their time, however if they wish to, and can do so without sacrificing their duties as a MP, then I see no problem with it.

Joanne Gray

Reading Chronicle:

Although one could argue that having a job would keep MPs in touch with reality, I am concerned that firstly: being an MP should be their prime function, and secondly they are already highly paid as MPs. There are other more worthy candidates for jobs such as these. It almost feels a little greedy.
