FLOWERS and cards came pouring in for a special lady from Woodley this week who celebrated her 102nd birthday.

Hilda Hanson was surrounded by friends and family at her home on Duffield Road for the big day on Friday, March 10.

Coming from a family of six brothers and one sister, Hilda went on to have four children, 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George, sadly passed away 24 years ago after starting married life in Henley.

Daughter-in-law, Joy Hanson, said: “She has carers in full time with her and someone gets her up in the morning. She obviously doesn’t move very fast but she is still with it.

“Friends and family were popping into the house throughout the day giving her flowers and cards and when the grandchildren finished school we had a big birthday cake with 102 on it.

“She told us she didn’t want a big fuss with lots of presents and she would have been happy with a nice card, but she received lots of nice presents. We got her a bracelet, a broach, a scarf and a cardigan.”

Hilda lived in Wargrave for most of her life and came over to Woodley when she had retired as a silver service waitress of 20 years.

Her older sister also made it to three-figures and Hilda says the secret to her long-living is a contented mind and a loving family.
