VIOLENT winds have ravaged the town today, forcing a billboard on Wokingham Road to come loose.

Storm Doris buffeted the area and resulted in crews from Dee Road and Whitely Wood being called out at 10.30am to secure the large advertising hoarding.

The storm has caused extensive delays to commuters, as well as bus and rail passengers, with two fallen trees affecting rail services between Reading and Guildford.

Another tree came crashing down on Pierces Hill in Tilehurst, while Caversham and Dee Road attended a collapsed chimney.

The billboard was ripped from the wall of an Indian restaurant, Miahs Garden Of Gulab and the road was closed for two hours while fire crews moved the sign.

A spokesman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 10.31 to an incident involving on Wokingham Road where a billboard had come loose.

"We mobilised an appliance from Whitley Wood and the Heavy Rescue Unit from Dee Road.

"Crews made the structure safe by removing the billboard using the crane on the Heavy Rescue Unit. We received the stop message at 12.13."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police added: "We were called to this incident at 9.56am today.

"The road had to be closed until about midday as the fire service moved the billboard.

"With Storm Doris moving across our region, Thames Valley Police is experiencing a higher than usual number of calls.

"We are working with our emergency services partners to respond to all enquiries but remind the public only to dial 999 in a genuine emergency.

"We would encourage the public to follow advice and plan your journeys accordingly.

"News of any disruption will also be shared by your local Thames Valley Police twitter account. Full details can be found on Thames Valley Police website."
