FOR THE first time in eight years MMA returns to Rivermead Leisure Complex with a star-studded line up of fights on March 4.

The sport has been neglected in Reading over the last decade but is set to make a big return with the help of current UFC middleweight champion, Michael Bisping.

Bisping fought in the town nine years ago and is eager to see MMA make a comeback at 'Budo 18' which will feature 16 different fights.

Promoter Andy Sledge said: "There has been a massive change in people's attitudes towards the sport. There was a time when people didn't appreciate the skill involved, but people like Conor McGregor have really helped to put a more positive light on MMA.

"People are now starting to realise that there is a lot of mental skill involved, as well as physical. Michael lives in America and he has a busy schedule to defend his title, but he has promised to make it to the event if he can.

"This is a major step in the right direction after a long wait. We want the people of Reading to come and enjoy the evening and hopefully it will be a regular event in coming years."

MMA fights used to take place at Rivermead some years ago, but the council put a temporary ban on competitions after rioting broke out.

Doors open at 5pm and the first fight gets underway at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.x3promotions.co.uk and start at £25.
