PLANS to install a demountable swimming pool at Rivermead Leisure Centre were approved at a council planning meeting on Wednesday, February 8.

The project is driven by the need to replace Central Pool, which is due to close later this year owing to high running costs.

Work is expected to start on the Richfield Avenue site in May, with a view to opening the facilities in January 2018.

There was overwhelming support among the councillors present to provide a temporary solution to the shortage of swimming pools in Reading.

Councillor Sarah-Jane Hacker, vice-chair of the Planning Applications Committee, said: "We do need a solution. Unfortunately, Central Pool is reaching the end of its life and we have been considering a new solution since 2010.

"It will be a great boom for west Reading and hopefully there will be appropriate bus services. It is nice to see this application coming forward.

"I hope the residents concerned about potential noise pollution during the construction phase will be consulted and made aware of the timescale for the project.

"It will be excellent for people to have a swimming pool they are proud of and that they enjoy using."

The proposal to extend the northern part of the complex to accommodate the demountable pool was put forward by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, who have managed the site in partnership with the council since 2006.

Councillors welcomed this temporary solution while a long term plan is made for re-siting Central Pool.

However, there were concerns among some residents surrounding the impact on the environment and how the site will be used after the pool serves its purpose.

The modern facility is likely to contain an eight-lane, 25-metre competition standard pool, as well as additional space for a range of other indoor sports.
