COMMUTERS using Burghfield Road will be delighted to learn that repairs have been made following a burst water main that caused dismay on Tuesday morning.

Drivers were being re-directed throughout the day after the leaking pipe threatened to damage Burghfield Bridge, holding up traffic between Mill Road and Underwood Road.

Although road access has improved significantly, the bridge will remain closed until Wednesday afternoon, while safety checks are carried out and the new road surface dries.

Thames Water have fixed the burst pipe and re-surfaced the area that was excavated.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: "Burghfield Bridge is on course to reopen later this afternoon. The pipe was fixed the same day and a survey of the bridge yesterday found it had not been damaged.

"We’ve resurfaced the section where we had to dig to fix our burst pipe and are waiting for the asphalt to set.

"We’re sorry for the disruption while we were fixing our burst pipe on Burghfield Bridge. We had to be sure the bridge had not been damaged before we could resurface the road and we completed this work on Wednesday."

West Berkshire Council confirmed that the water main was repaired on the same day and that the work was carried out by Thames Water.
