COMMUNITY campaigners have sparked a new craze in a bid to raise funds to save the sinking Arthur Hill swimming pool.

Save Arthur Hill Pool launched its #DrySwimChallenge, which sees people sharing photos and videos of them swimming on dry land in protest of the decision to shut the pool.

So far people have filmed themselves dry swimming on trampolines, exercise bikes in the pool's spinning studio and on the street outside.

Arthur Hill campaigner Marlon Minty said: “When Reading Borough Council closes Arthur Hill Pool later this month many people in East Reading will have no option but to swim on dry land if they fancy taking a dip.

“It's a bit of fun which we hope will raise awareness of our appeal and encourage people who haven't already supported us to become involved and hopefully also give us a bob or two."

Campaigners have so far amassed more than £5,000 towards their cause, and want to raise £10,000 by the end of the year.

The cash raised will be used to prepare a business plan to keep the pool open, but if it fails it will be donated to local schools instead.

Mr Minty added: "We thought we might as well use this as a theme to let people know about our crowdfunding appeal.

"Everyone is welcome to join in – all you need is a camera-phone and a social media account. You don't have to dress up or do a sophisticated stunt when you film yourself dry swimming - but if you want to, we can't wait to see the results."

The campaign is modelled on the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' and 'Mannequin Challenge' that have successfully raised monies for charitable causes.
