A SMARTPHONE app which can detect empty blue badge parking spaces in the town is on trial.

Sensors were placed on 70 parking bays in Reading which can tell people using the app when spaces are filled.

The EU funded project, called SIMON, is being piloted in other cities across Europe, and will continue in Reading until April 2017.

Marian Marsh, transport planner at Reading Borough Council, said: "It is all about making life simple for people with disabilities.

"The idea is that you can check on the app before you leave home where there is a free blue badge parking space."

Merry Cross, members of Berks Disabled People Against Cuts, said she welcomed the council's attempt to make parking easier for disabled residents.

However, she said by the time people arrive in Reading after checking the app from home the parking spaces might be taken.

"This scheme seems beneficial," she said.

"But given how quickly spaces go in Reading it remains to be seen whether in practice it works."
