FRAUDSTERS bought hundreds of pounds worth of food and drink after Deliveroo customers had their accounts broken into, a Watchdog investigation revealed.

Customers were left furious after discovering they had apparently paid for food to be delivered to random addresses miles away from their homes.

Among the disgruntled Deliveroo users was Judith MacFayden, from Caversham, who revealed she had to cancel her bank card after being told she had paid for more than £200 worth of food to be delivered to a mysterious address in London.

She told the BBC's Watchdog programme: “I noticed that I had a 'thank you' email from Deliveroo for a burger joint in Chiswick.

“I thought that was really odd so I went on to my account and had a look and there had been four orders that afternoon to a couple of addresses in London.

"'I was pretty shocked. Did that mean they had all the card details? I was straight on to the bank to get that card cancelled."

The take-away food app launched in 2013, and works by showing customers nearby restaurants which can deliver to their homes.

Mrs MacFayden was not the only person to who complained about their account being breached, with scores of people nationwide experiencing similar problems.

Deliveroo denied their customers' financial details were hacked however, and said fraudsters stole passwords from other data breaches to access Deliveroo accounts.

A spokesman added: "We are aware of these cases raised by Watchdog - they involve stolen food, not credit card numbers. These issues occur when criminals use a password stolen from another service unrelated to our company in a major data breach.

"The stolen password is then used to fraudulently access someone's account. This is why we urge customers to use strong and unique passwords for every service they use."
