IT is now possible to track the progress on the construction site of a multimillion pound set of apartments for the elderly in Woodley.

Work began on the £6million independent living facility behind Fosters Lane in April and now people can track the progression on the site over the next year via a timelapse video.

A specialist camera overlooking the site was set up ten weeks ago which has recorded the hive of activity on the site and will continue to do so until it is due to be completed next Autumn.

“We hope people will enjoy seeing the video and how quickly progress is being made,” said Bill Flood, managing director of company Wokingham Housing Limited, who is overseeing the project.

“We did this for two reasons, firstly because the council had done something similar to this before with a school build and it was incredibly popular getting a huge number of hits.

“It just gives people a chance to see what we are up to so from our point of view it is worth spending the money to put the camera up, which cost about £6,000.”

He added it is also a good promotional opportunity for the construction companies involved.

When the mammoth project is finished the residents will be under the care of the council's social care company, Optalis.

Once finished the two-storey structure will contain 34 one-bedroom apartments complete with balconies and communal facilities, including two lounge areas provided by the social care company.

The new development is replacing the Fosters care home which was shut down three years ago because it was no longer fit for purpose despite the best efforts of campaigners to save it.

At the time two petitions were lodged with hundreds of signatures in an attempt to save it but Wokingham Borough Council ultimately made the difficult decision to close it because it was in a 'poor' condition.

The timelapse video will be updated on a monthly basis throughout the construction and is available on for people to view on the Wokingham Housing website.

Construction of the Fosters development is due to be completed in October 2017
