READING FC continued to buck the trend this season as they took their annual team photograph in a different location.

Just as they did when they unveiled their kit from the stratosphere, the usual idea of taking the snap at Madejski Stadium was ripped up as players, staff and management gathered at Forbury Gardens.

Word quickly spread of the news yesterday morning as the players were bussed to one of the town's most recognisable landmarks, the Maiwand Lion.

The lion was erected in 1884 to commemorate the 329 men from the 66th Berkshire Regiment of Foot who died in service during the second Anglo-Afghan War.

It is the same lion that features on the club's crest.

Each player had individual headshots taken for the 2016/17 season, along with Sir John Madejski, Nigel Nowe, Brian Tevreden and majority stakeholder Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth.

Five young competition winners also had the chance to take their photo with the playing squad, while fans then had the chance to grab autographs and take pictures with their favourite Royals.
