THE ANCIENT art of dragon boat racing is coming to the banks of the town in an event organised by the Reading Lions Club.

On August 21 top class oarsman, amateur paddlers and have-a-row heroes all have a chance to pit themselves against one another in the Dragon Boat Festival.

Around 20 teams of 15 will compete in a ferocious yet family friendly knock out tournament at the Thames Valley Business Park.

Andy Young, member of the Lions and organiser of the race, is convinced a frantic sprint along the Thames will bring the best out of Reading residents.

“There are 15 people on a team, with 10 rowing each race and one banging the drum,” Mr Young said.

“The feeling of comradery, the adrenaline rush when the whistle blows and the splash of water that hits when the oars go in can't be beaten.

“I am certain Reading will rise to the challenge.”

Despite the promised intensity of the event, it is geared towards groups of friends, colleagues and teams of charity workers rather than professional outfits.

To add to the atmosphere, free parking and entry will greet non-rowing participants alongside the 501 Garrison – the UK's foremost Star Wars cos-players.

The entry cost for each boat is £400 before July 27, which equates to £27 each when split between a team of 15.

“We are really keen that people take the opportunity to raise money for charity,” explained Mr Young, whose Reading Lions support local community groups and promote fitness.

“If businesses help with the entry fee and all team members collect sponsorship, there is big potential for raising a lot of money.”
