READING went against the nation's decision to leave the EU because of its place in the "out looking" Thames Valley, according to one of its MPs.

Both Rob Wilson and Alok Sharma sided with the Remain campaign but have said they will respect the public's choice after a majority voted in favour of Brexit.

It comes as Reading and many of its neighbours in Berkshire showed support for the UK staying in the EU.

However, as the final polls were verified, it was officially revealed this morning that the country will sever its political ties with the continent after decades of union.

Reading East MP Rob Wilson said: "The British people have made their decision and I fully respect that and I am going to do all I can to implement it in the most positive and effective way possible.

"I guess the Berkshire phenomenon is to do with the fact that Berkshire is probably one of the most out looking parts of the UK.

"We have Heathrow airport, good transport and immigration has never been the biggest concern on the agenda as it's normally trumped by economics here.

"The most important thing we all need to do now, whatever political parties or views on being in or out of the EU, is to make sure that the UK grabs hold of stability as quick as possible and everybody has a role to play in that."

Reading West MP Alok Sharma said he was pleased to see local voters side with Remain but added: "I am genuinely disappointed by the national result but at the end of the day it's been a very big democratic process and it's up to members of parliament to respect the wishes of the members of public."

Mr Wilson said it was too soon to comment on who could replace David Cameron as Prime Minister following his resignation earlier this morning.

However he added it could be someone the public is "less familiar with" and answered only "who knows" as to whether he himself would be in that mix.
