ACCESS issues at Theale polling station have left some voters finding it difficult to cast their ballots in today's EU referendum.

Construction work opposite the John Cumber Hall, off High Street, has meant pedestrians need to enter via a narrow muddy track to get into the venue.

Those on foot have managed to get in without issue but wheelchair users and people with mobility problems have struggled.

An alternative route in from James Butcher Drive is available but one disabled resident, John Ransom, has said he may not be able to cast his ballot today.

The 68-year-old, who lives a stone's throw away from the polling station, said: "They all knew about this happening today so why did they pick today to do work on that entrance.

"I went to the pub for some dinner and was going to vote afterwards but as soon as I saw it I thought I've got no chance in my wheelchair."

Although contractors have laid down wooden boards to make access easier, local councillor Alan Macro said he was concerned about the situation.

He said: "I first became aware of the problem yesterday afternoon when they were doing the excavations outside the entrance.

"I went down there this morning and persuaded the polling station staff to put up some extra signs because they were being obscured by the security hoarding.

"They have put down plywood boards but it's not satisfactory - it's just the best we can do in a short time.

"There was a lady with a walking frame there this morning and me and a workman had to help her in."

West Berkshire Council, who are in charge of running polling stations in the district, have been contacted for comment.
