FORGET Bourbons or custard creams. Biscuit lovers can taste their very own custom-made teatime treat at a novelty art installation coming to Reading this weekend.

Canvas of Crumbs, also known as the Reading Biscuit Experience, takes 30 guests an hour for a dunk in the town’s culinary heritage.

Along the way, visitors will be able to add their own decorative twists to a finished biscuit, with a range of professional tools and ingredients to let the imaginations of even the smallest of bakers run wild.

Guests will also have the chance to sample three new creations which pay homage to the famous three Bs — brewery, bulbs and biscuits.

The confections also have Reading’s stamp on them.

Their intricate moulds were created by University of Reading students, who in turn were inspired by now-forgotten recipes from Reading manufacturer Huntley & Palmers.

Once finished, the personalised designs can be photographed and uploaded to social media with prizes for the best results.

The extravaganza is being curated by studio Bompas & Parr, which aims to create culinary experiences that give guests the same sense of joy and wonder that a child has when she sees the night sky.

Eponymous founders Sam Bompas and Harry Parr have travelled the world delighting customers from Southwark to Sydney, but are excited to be bringing their latest installation to Reading.

Mr Bompas, 32, said: “I have been obsessed with biscuits for years and when we found out that Reading was celebrating its cultural heritage we wanted to get stuck in.

“There is probably nowhere else in Reading where you can come and have your very own edible artwork.”

Mr Parr hoped to inspire the next generation of biscuiteers and culinary decorators through the exhibition.

He said: “The status of biscuits as a national culinary treasure is inherently connected to the recognisability of Britain’s finest biscuit designs, themselves a wonder of the modern world and a fruit of the innovation of mass production.”

Canvas of Crumbs is part of Eat Reading, a month-long celebration of food and dining.

Its organiser Zsuzi Lindsay said: “We’re so proud of our biscuit heritage in Reading and while production may have moved elsewhere in the country, biscuits will always be tied to our civic psyche.

“With Canvas of Crumbs, we’re bringing biscuits back to Berkshire!”
