A CRASH investigation has been launched after a woman was hospitalised when a light aircraft smashed into a parked car.

The RAF-owned Tiger Moth biplane collided with two vehicles shortly after taking off at a show at Brimpton airstrip in Aldermaston.

After first hitting an unoccupied Renault Megane the plane then struck a second car where a woman in her sixties was sat.

She was rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford in an air ambulance with serious facial injuries.

The pilot and passenger of the 1940s-built aircraft, both men in their sixties, were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

No one else in the crowd was involved but an expert investigator is to visit the airfield to conduct examinations.

There were around 100 spectators at the Brimpton Airfield Fly-in when the accident happened at around 3pm on Sunday.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "Two males in the aeroplane had minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

"One of the cars was empty at the time of the collision but in the other there was a female passenger in her sixties.

"She sustained serious facial injuries and she was flown to the John Radcliffe Hospital."

Her condition was described as "not life threatening".

Police and fire crews also attended the scene and evidence is now being passed on to the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) to assess how the collision occurred.

An AAIB spokesman said: "We are conducting an investigation. One of our inspectors will be visiting the accident site as part of our enquiries."

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "The incident occurred at a small event attended by approx 100 spectators.

"There were two men in their sixties aboard the plane. It collided with the first car, a Renault Megane, which was unoccupied.

"A woman in her sixties was in the second car when the plane made contact and she was injured.

"The pilot and his male passenger suffered minor injuries which were treated at the scene, while the woman was airlifted to hospital."
