THE latest bridge to span the Thames in Reading has officially been christened with its new name.

Taking inspiration from the parkland surrounding it, Christchurch Bridge had its title sealed with a plaque unveiling ceremony yesterday (Wednesday).

Following Reading Borough Council's most popular poll to date the pedestrian and cycle crossing, which sits between Reading Bridge and Caversham Bridge, was formally named after first opening to the public last September.

In her penultimate act as Mayor of Reading, Cllr Sarah Hacker was joined by the authority's deputy leader Cllr Tony Page for the brief event.

Cllr Hacker said: "Of all the fantastic events and openings I've had the pleasure of attending over the last year, the opening of Reading’s new pedestrian and cycle bridge in September really stands out for me.

"Christchurch Bridge is a landmark structure for Reading which will be there for many decades to come, so I am delighted to now get the opportunity to officially name Christchurch Bridge."
