A MAN killed in a collision in Caversham this morning pushed a woman out of harm’s way seconds before the impact, according to neighbours.

He had been walking in Albert Road when a car slew onto the pavement knocking him into the air and narrowly missing the other person.

After suffering life-threatening head injuries he was rushed to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he later died.

His next of kin have been informed.

The collision, between a blue Vauxhall Astra and a blue Ford Fiesta, took place at around 10.30am today at the notorious crossroads of Albert Road and Highmoor Road.

At some point during the crash one of the cars veered onto the path where the man was walking with another woman.

Tony Woolridge, who had been nearby when the collision took place, said he had been told the man’s final action was to push the person to safety.

He said: “He must have seen it coming towards them as I’m told he pushed her out of the way with all his might and then he was knocked up 10ft in the air and hit his head on the road. God rest him."

Another neighbour, Chandra Sagar Lama, described hearing the loud bang of the crash as he walked on the opposite side of the road.

He added: “There were so many people coming to help him.

“He fell down and after people were coming to see what had happened but he did not get back up.”

Paramedics raced the man to hospital by road shortly after an air ambulance also arrived on the scene.

Two people from the cars involved in the crash were treated at the roadside for minor injuries.

Officers from Thames Valley Police closed off the road for around four hours while emergency services worked and investigators collected evidence and photographed the scene.

Today's crash comes one week after an elderly couple and a family escaped serious injury after their cars hit into each other at the same junction.

An appeal has since been launched for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
