LIVE music and a dazzling display of fireworks are set to return to the Woodley Carnival this year.

Neighbours called for the evening party to come back to the annual festivities following a five year absence.

But organisers are still determined to secure more floats following criticisms of last year's event.

Madison Heights, a soul and motown band have been announced as the headline act, with support bands to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Sue Tyler, member of the Woodley Carnival Committee, said: "This has been due to more people standing up to volunteer and offers of help.

"We also have Woodleys [estate agents] to sponsor the headline event."

Last year, neighbours hit out at the Carnival after less than five lorry floats were seen parading the streets during the procession.

Mrs Tyler said the volunteer group are working hard to secure more lorries for this year, but hefty insurance fees are proving to be a stumbling block.

She said: "Last year the Woodley Carnival was criticised for only a few large vehicle floats but we have found that are interested in helping but they have to get permission from their insurance companies.

"A couple of companies have come back and said no.

"We are trying to get people interested but they have to pay for insurance.

"It's a sign of the times."

A message on the carnival committee's website reads: "The evening concert is back. After an absence of 5 years the carnival concert is returning, party into the evening then watch our fabulous firework finale.

"Madison Heights are undoubtedly the most authentic motown and soul band to hit the stage, they deliver an energetic and exciting performance of classic hits by the legends of soul and motown. – this is a real tribute that even the legends would be proud to have them performing their hits."

The 56th Woodley Carnival will be held on Saturday June 11.
