DRIVERS won't need to worry about loose change next month when a cashless pay and display system comes to Reading.

The exciting new system, which will be introduced on February 1, allows registered drivers to pay for parking by a mobile phone app.

It also means that instead of rushing back to cars with arms loaded with shopping to top up tickets, shoppers can extend their allotted stay at the click of a button.

Councillor Tony Page, Reading Borough Council's lead member for transport, said: "This is an additional way of paying for parking which takes away the worry of having the right coins in your pocket when you park in pay and display bays. It also allows people to top up their stay remotely, instead of returning to their car.

“Many drivers will already be familiar with the system, as it is widely used across the UK. I’d like to emphasise however, the option to pay by cash remains in place for those who prefer the traditional method.”

Motorists can pre-register to use the service - operated by RingGo - by app or by phone at www.myRingGo.co.uk/register.

Traffic wardens can check which cars are parked with RingGo by using their handheld units.

The system can also send optional text message alerts, letting drivers know when their parking is coming to an end.

The price of using the service is 20p, and reminder messages cost an extra 10p.

Neighbours can still use the traditional pay and display system.
