A TEENAGE BMX rider is being sought by police after he attempted to rob a woman while she had her young child in pushchair.

The 35-year-old was walking along the footpath between Caversham weir and Heron Island when the cyclist approached.

Despite trying to move out of his way the teenager blocked the path and demanded the woman hand over her bag at around 1.45pm on Saturday.

He then threatened her which led the mother to shout for help.

The boy, thought to around 16 years old, then cycled off in the direction of Reading Bridge.

He was described as mixed race, around 5ft 6ins tall, slim to medium build and with short afro hair.

He was wearing a black hooded jacket, black jeans and black Nike trainers.

His BMX was also black and looked old with flaking paint and no handle grips.

The woman was uninjured and nothing was taken from her.

Investigating officer, PC Victoria Driver from Reading CID, said: "This offence happened in daylight in an area which is a pedestrian route into the town centre from Caversham. "There were people in the vicinity and a man stopped to help. I would like to speak to anyone who has not already contacted police who may have information about what happened. Please call Thames Valley Police via 101."
