Highdown pool and gym has reopened to the public more than a year after it closed.

However, to use the gym and 17m swimming pool people have to sign up to a monthly membership scheme.

The Surley Row, Emmer Green, centre had been run outside of school hours by Reading Borough Council until July 2014.

The school then took over the running and embarked on a refurbishment plan and closed it to general public use. In September organised groups including theatre and gymnastic training as well as swim schools, were allowed to rent out their premises.

In February head teacher Rachel Cave said it had increased the number of people using the centre in six short months and hoped more would in the future.

Members have been using the centre since the beginning of September and the school has now embarked on actively seeking new recruits.

It has also employed two members of staff, including qualified personal trainers, who will offer consultations and fitness and training advice under a membership only scheme of £17.50 a month.
