A MAN was sworn at and punched in the face while walking through the town centre in an "unprovoked" attack last week.

Thames Valley Police want witnesses to come forward after the man was beaten up while walking home from the Hope Tap pub in Friar Street.

He left the pub and walked towards West Street, shortly before midnight on Thursday October 1.

As he walked along the road a short man, described as white and in his 20's, walked up to him and started to hurl abuse, before punching him in the face.

The attacker fled the scene and headed towards the town hall in Friar Street.

The 38-year-old had a scratch to his face but didn't need to go to hospital.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said the attack was wearing a dark blue or black zip-up jacket and dark trousers, adding: "The incident appears to have been an unprovoked attack.

"At around 11.50pm on Thursday (1/10), the victim, a 38-year-old man, left the Hope Tap pub in Friar Street and walked towards West Street.

"A man approached him and swore at him, then punched him in the face."
