A spectacular sequence of the moon turning to blood red set the night sky alight in the early hours of Monday morning.

This was the full sequence as captured by Reading Chronicle photographer Chris Forsey.

The blood moon was also a super moon where it appeared bigger than a normal full moon. A super moon is when the moon is at its closest it ever gets to the Earth.

The colour is created because the Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light more strongly than red light, and it is this red light that reaches the lunar surface.
