COMMUNITY support workers and solicitors battled it out in a bake off challenge last week.

Support U, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender resource centre challenged Rowberry Morris in a contest to serve up the tastiest treats.

A selection of finely baked snacks were on the menu, including millionaire shortbread, lemon cake and flapjacks.

Lorna McArdle, founder of Support U, said she had worked tirelessly at home to prepare a batch of homemade muffins for the event.

She said: "Today is a fundraising event to raise money for Sue Ryder.

"We have prepared all sorts of cakes.

"We want to raise money for the Duchess of Kent Hospice, as well as raise a little bit for ourselves.

"We would like to raise £100 or so, every little bit we raise helps."

The charity runs solely on donations, and provides support for the LGBT community, such as work advice for workplace problems as well as personal issues.

Mayor of Reading Councillor Sarah Hacker was on the judging panel, along with Robin Banks from Jack FM and Brent Guiblin from the Sun Inn in Castle Street.

In a tight contest, the judges crowned Chris Searle from Rowberry Morris’s Victoria sandwich cake with fresh strawberries and cream the winner.

The event raised a total of £224.97.
