One of the most decadent things a woman, and now more men, can have done - is an amazing cut and blow dry.

Sitting in that chair as people busy themselves around you fetching, water, coffee or even wine, running their fingers through your hair and asking you questions about your life can make you feel quite frankly, special.

Sean Whelan is a principle stylist at Electric and said that the most successful haircut for him would be for a person to get the cut they want and be able to recreate it at home.

The 29-year-old has been with the Electric "family" for three years and is now at the third of their six stores after stints in Oxford and Brighton, and his expertise lies in colour and wedding styles, said: "I have to work with and listen to the people who come in.

"I can't do what I want as the client has to be happy.

"When they sit in the chair I find I end up finding out why they are coming here, whether they are up or down, feeling good or low and why they may want a change.

"Magazine cut outs of celebrities styles or colours are a saviour as I can see exactly what they want from cut to colour as caramel will mean something different to me and you.

"But we have to manage their expectations adapt it to suit them, their face and tones of their skin."

He said the relationship between salon clients and stylists is somewhat unique in the fact that what he creates can affect a person's self esteem and how they perceive themselves when they step out into real life.

He said: "My clients are aged between nine and 90. Some have their hair washed and blow dried twice a week, others once a week, while others are twice a year."

The staff at the King's Road salon launched by award winning and celebrity hair stylist Mark Woolley, has its own range of Electric products and keeps up to date with latest fashions and trends with a once a month training at its Brighton branch.

But I was waiting to see what this would-be hair magician could do for my curly-wurly "thirsty" locks after a period of neglect.

After a consultation Sean orders a moisture enriched shampoo and condition with a hot towel, which I learn is to seal in the beneficial affects of the treatment.

As Sean gets going with the scissors and we talk its clear that he loves his job, has numerous industry qualifications, and is considering all the possibilities for my hair, its potential colour.

He said: "I know this is a good cut but a great one is when the client can manage it themselves at home."

Electric manage Aaron Tierney said Electric was setting up some exciting events for loyal and new customers to be getting involved in.

The 28-year-old said: "We love working for Electric and we love the Electric brand so we want to shout about that! I think that’s reflected in our service when you visit our salon and we aim to make sure everyone leaves feeling uplifted. Ultimately we aim to give a new face to the hair industry in Reading and to change the way people view their hair care regime."

On Tuesday, September 15, the team is holding a Love Your Hair evening where the have guests giving advice about looking after hair from the inside to out. The team of stylists will recreate of styles and trends from London Fashion Week on Wednesday September 30 in an invitation only event and later in the year they will help launch a new salon-to-home treatments and hair regime from L'Oreal the Pro Fibre system.

As for my hair Sean used less product and straightening irons than are usually applied at home and a bit more time and precision on the blowdrying to work magic and create a sleek and smooth A-line bob that took into consideration everything about me.

An yes I walked out of their taller, happier and held my head up higher like the tv adverts as I walked around town but I don't think it was just the style that did that but the entire Electric experience.
