TRAFFIC in the town centre is at a standstill after the borough council closed off the IDR on-slip near the Oracle roundabout.

The short stretch of road was closed this morning for resurfacing by Reading Borough Council.

It will reopen again at 3.30pm, and be closed all day tomorrow from 9.30am until the work is finished.

Today commuters have been spotted queuing around the roundabout as they are redirected towards the Forbury roundabout, and back along Queens Road to the IDR.

Councillor Tony Page, Reading’s lead councillor for strategic environment, planning and transport, said: “This is a much reduced resurfacing programme compared to recent years due to the substantial cuts in the government grant for highways maintenance.

“Of course, the resurfacing work will cause some disruption and we ask all road users for understanding while they take place. However, the result will be a much improved journey for people using these routes.”
