A MAN who ended up rescuing his stolen rubbish bins from the Thames has described the street he lives in as a “hooligan hotspot”.

Max Dutton immediately tweeted his thanks to a good samaritan from the Caversham Boats Service after the employee helped him get the bins out of the river using a rope on Tuesday morning.

But after rushing home to Thames Promenade having reclaimed his two wet bins, he was left “furious” after not only being late for work in Maidenhead, but also missing his waste disposal collection as well.

Mr Dutton, a historic researcher, said: “I was walking along the Thames path and suddenly noticed a boat with two bins caught on the back of it.Then I had a closer look and realised they were my bins.”

He was able to identify them from the house number painted on the side.

He added: “I ran to get them in my work suit and it was a nightmare but luckily, a man from the Caversham Boats Service helped me flag the boat down and together we got them off eventually.”

He added: “I rushed home, hoping to catch the bin men in time, but they had gone. Not the best start to a Tuesday morning, really.”

But the 22-year-old said this was not the first instance of “hooliganism” seen in his street since he moved into his Caversham house six months ago.

He said: “We’ve had windows smashed on cars and a few months ago on Easter Sunday someone had ripped off the wing mirrors too.

“It does seem like a bit of a hooligan hotspot and certainly attracts people that want to cause a bit of trouble.”

Thames Valley Police have declined to comment.
