A ROYAL AIR FORCE sergeant whose mum died of breast cancer last year will set off on a 4,200-mile journey across Europe in a three-wheeled car to raise money for charity.

Mark McNeil, who lives in Park Lane, Tilehurst, will be joined by Corporal James Booth and Senior Aircraft Technician Daniel Wellstead to drive a Reliant Robin from their base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Malta, and back, in 13 days.

The intrepid trio, who will set off on September 7, are raising money for Everyman, which supports men with testicular and prostate cancer.

Mark, from RAF 10 Squadron, saw the advances in breast cancer care as his mum, Sarah, battled the disease for five years and decided he wanted to raise awareness for a lesser-known cancer charity.

He said: "We all know someone who has had or has died from cancer and while my mum had cancer I noticed the treatment got better and that there was a lot of support for Cancer Research UK.

"I wanted to do something different and focus on a charity which perhaps does not get as much support. Everyman just seemed to suit us."

Mark and his colleagues will be at Sainsbury's in Calcot on Saturday, August 4, to show shoppers their RAF-themed car and tell people about their challenge.

The 31-year-old added: "All our friends think we're nuts. I think they think it's just some boys trip but the car is noisy, tiny and the brakes are awful so it is daunting. I think we are apprehensively looking forward to it."
