POLICE investigating the discovery of baby Amelia on a priest's doorstep in Reading a week ago arrested two people last night.

They say a 26-year-old man and a woman of 18, who were detained in Winchester, are being questioned on suspicion of child abandonment.

Officers launched an appeal to find Amelia's mother after the 7lb girl, who is around three weeks old, was found by Father Edward Stachurski, from the Polish Church of the Sacred Heart, in a holdall on the doorstep of his London Road presbytery last Thursday night.

Amelia was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where she was examined by staff who said she had been well cared for and was none the worse for her experience, before being placed with a foster family.
