A MAN has died following a blaze at his west Berkshire home today.

Fire crews from Dee Road and Newbury were called to the semi-detached house in Rowlands Copse, Midgham, at 9.30am, managed to get the man, believed to be in his sixties, out of the building but paramedics were unable to revive him.

Watch manager Bob Mitchell, from Newbury fire station, said: "We were called by a next door neighbour and when we got there, the lounge was completely on fire and the whole house was heavily smoke logged.

"The man was brought out by firefighters using breathing apparatus and treated by paramedics. We were there for several hours."

Police set up road blocks around the village while firefighters handled the incident, and spokesman Craig Evry said: "The fire is not believed to be suspicious.

"As it appears to be accidental, the coroner's office has been informed and the case will be passed to them in due course."
