FIRST-HAND experiences of danger on the roads prompted Nick Mills to start a new business.

Nick, from Sulhamstead, has invented Vispack, a pack of five high visibity (HV) jackets together with information to aid safety in the event of accidents.

He has sold builders' equipment through his In Star business for eight years including HV jackets but found the supply of jackets for motorists lacking.

On one occasion Nick was first on the scene of a major motorway crash in bad weather and struggled to be seen. He said: "I parked up and tried to slow the traffic. That's when you realise how invisible you are in snow and ice."

Two years ago he pondered inventing a pack of jackets - one for each occupant - to be stored in the car. Last year his wife Jo was made redundant and she joined him to develop Vispack, five HV jackets packed into a wallet the size of a piece of A4 paper and about 35mm thick.

They added a set of information cards which can help in an accident.

The pack, sells at £16.95, while individual jackets are often around £6.99. Nick says the crux is that the pack is made to be stored in the car, either in the footwell or the magazine nets as all too often jackets are in the boot.

He said: "If you have been in an accident you may not be able to access the boot."
