READING Welsh Society heard all about a beautiful fairytale castle at its latest meeting when members learned of the work of William Burges.

Reading University lecturer Dr Sue Branfoot told the audience all about the Victorian architect, the man behind the restoration of Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch, a Gothic castle on the outskirts of the city.

At the society's next meeting on February 15, fellow Reading University lecturer Dr Ann Walker will talk about modern-day practice in herbal medicine, and Judge Simon Oliver will discuss the role of a Reading judge on March 14.

St David's day, on March 1, also brings a celebration of Wales' patron saint, and the society is gearing up for its St David's Day dinner and disco at the Calcot Hotel.

Guest speaker at the event, which is £30 a ticket including a three-course meal, is Goronwy Roberts, former chief executive of the Essex Ambulance NHS Trust.

The society meets at 7.30pm at St Peter's Church in Church Road, Earley.

President Walter Williams said: "We aim to have a programme of speakers talking not only about all things Welsh, but also things of interest to our members and because we're in Reading, things about this area too.

"The society offers the chance to meet other Welsh people and other Welsh speakers, and have cameraderie and friendship."

To join the society for £10 a year, contact president Walter Williams on 0118 947 7350.
