The Hoosiers

“HELLO, my beautiful Reading!”

The Hoosiers’ lead singer Irwin Sparkes greeted a bumper crowd at their celebratory homecoming gig last week.

From the start, both crowd and band were up for this one.

For The Hoosiers, the gig marked the end of a tour promoting a hugely successful debut album and a string of hit singles.

For the fans, it was a chance to welcome back the local heroes after being away for so long making a name for themselves.

Such is the appeal of The Hoosiers’ quirky, breezy pop that the audience was made up of everyone from young teenagers probably at their first gig, to adults definitely not at theirs.

The atmosphere was jubilant, particularly after a blistering set from support band, Officer Kicks.

By the end of their set, it was up to The Hoosiers to round the night off in style.

The crowd sang along to every word of hits like Cops And Robbers and Goodbye Mr A, and as they filed out after the inevitable encore, still humming the tunes, there was a sense of a band being welcomed back into the arms of the hometown faithful.

* See The Guide, out with The Chronicle on Thursday, November 13, for more views from the gig and an interview with support band Officer Kicks.
