Newbury lacking a killer instinct
NEWBURY Town joint manager Darren Angell has called for his side to be more ruthless in front of goal as they try to build on their encouraging start in the Hellenic League.
The men from Faraday Road secured the second win of their debut campaign in Division One (East) with a narrow 2-1 success over Chinnor on Saturday.
But Newbury needed an 89th minute own goal to snatch the three points from a game they dominated and Angell is hoping that his side can make things easier for themselves in their upcoming games.
He said: “I was pleased with how the guys played and really we deserved to have won by a few more if we had taken our chances.
“We should have been two or three-nil up by half-time and that is probably the one thing that I would want to improve.
“It’s been a good start, but if we can kill teams off when we get on top, then it will help get us up towards where we want to be in the table.”
With just one defeat in their opening six games – to Angell’s former club Kintbury Rangers – Newbury sit in an encouraging seventh spot in the early league table.
And Angell believes his men can kick on from a generally positive start.
He added: “Overall I’ve been happy with how it’s gone so far and those results have come against some of the top teams in the league.
“We got draws against Binfield and Ascot who are up in the top three and the one slightly weaker team we have played, Prestwood, we beat fairly comfortably.
“That’s got to give us confidence for how the rest of the season will go.”
In last Saturday’s clash at Faraday Road, Nathan Stamp opened his account for the season to give Newbury a deserved early lead.
After the hosts had failed to add to their advantage, Adam Smallwood pulled Chinnor back onto level terms midway through the second half, before Newbury snatched the points late on.
And the tests keep coming for Angell’s men, who travel to Holyport on Saturday to face another side who have started the season in fine style, before last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at Penn & Tylers Green.
He said: “We had to play well to beat Chinnor, because they were unbeaten coming into that game.
“And we’ll have to keep up that form because Holyport are another top side, but we have to be confident of going up there and getting something.”
