Clark looking for new keeper as Thompson quits

HUNGERFORD Town boss Alan Clark is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper following Paul Thompson’s decision to quit Bulpit Lane.

Thompson left the club earlier this week following a falling out with Clark and seems set for a move to Fairford Town after they put in a seven-day approach for the experienced keeper.

Thompson follows close friend Darren Robison out of the door after the full-back quit the club last week after he was dropped from the side which went down 3-0 at Witney on Bank Holiday Saturday.

However, the double departure has been offset by the arrival of Highworth Town midfielder Mark Jordan and Pete Macklin, who links up with brother Joe at Bulpit Lane, from Lydney Town.

Dominic Green can provide goalkeeping cover for Hungerford in the short-term but Clark is keen to sign an experienced stopper on a longer term basis.

“Me and Paul weren’t seeing eye to eye and it was probably best for everyone that he left the club,” Clark said.

“We’re fortunate that we’ve got Dominic as a very good temporary stand-in but I’ve put in a seven-day approach for another keeper.”

Thompson, who only arrived at Bulpit Lane earlier this year, kept a clean sheet in his final appearance for Town last weekend as they secured a 1-0 win at Shrivenham.

Tom Fila scored the only goal of the game after 30 minutes against his former club as Town continued their recent improved form.

Shrivenham were clearly still smarting from their 5-0 mauling at Highworth the previous week and seemed content to settle for a damage limitation exercise against Hungerford.

“They didn’t take too many chances as they didn’t want to get thrashed again,” admitted Clark.

“They didn’t come at us until the final minutes which made for an exciting end to what was otherwise a fairly average game.

“We missed a few chances to make the game safe which made it edgy when they had a go at us in the last five minutes.

“But we’re still a bit Jekyll and Hyde at the moment and are not firing on all cylinders.”

Hungerford travel to Carterton this Saturday and then entertain Reading Town next Wednesday.
