League cut down to five divisions
THE Reading Football League for season 2008/9 will contain only five divisions after it was agreed at the AGM on Tuesday night that Division Four would be disbanded.
This will leave 14 sides competing in both Divisions Two and Three next season.
Another major change is an increase in the number of clubs competing in the Senior Division to 12. Both of the sides who finished in the relegation places last season – Royal Mail and Woodcote/Stoke Row – have retained their places in the Senior section.
Taplow Utd have been promoted from the Premier Division despite only finishing in fourth place while Aldershot & District Senior Division side Sandhurst Devels have accepted an invitation to join the league. One side has resigned with Newbury FC accepting an invitation to join the Hellenic League.
League President John Dell paid glowing tributes to Phil Lewis and Peter Toft who have been active League Council members since its inception in 1988 and who have decided to step down. They were both made vice presidents.
The Wilf Fewtrell award for club secretary of the league went to Richard Ford of Woodcote/Stoke Row. Long-serving secretaries Peter Smyth of Englefield and Spike Gardner of SRCC are relinquishing their responsibilities and both were awarded long service awards, while Cookham Dean’s Neill Fryer was elected onto the league council.
The new season will start on Wednesday, September 3 for Senior and Premier Division clubs with the remainder of the league starting their campaigns on Saturday, September 6.
Three sides, AFC Corinthians, The Hop Leaf and Winnersh Rangers failed to make an appearance at the AGM, and all three were fined £75 for non attendance.
The league are on the lookout for new sponsors and any interested parties should contact League secretary Mark Rozzier on 0118 969 6399 or email to gensec.rfl@btinternet.com
