Spate of bin fires in early hours

Comment Bubble Comments (0) Printer Print Article

FOUR bins were set on fire in Caversham in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters from Caversham Road fire station were first called out at 4am by a concerned member of the public who said that youths had set fire to a bin.

On their way to the fire in St Anne's Road, the fire crew spotted another bin that had been dragged into the underpass underneath Caversham Bridge and set alight. They then tackled two bin blazes in St Anne's Road.

At 5am they were again called to a bin fire in St Anne's Road, making four within an hour.

Firefighter Stewart Kennedy said: "There was a spate of bin fire a couple of months ago, but there hadn't been anything for a while. Setting light to bins creates a lot of melted plastic to scrape off the pavement. There is a risk if there is something nearby that can catch light."
