Newley-elected Coronation Ward borough member for Woodley Kate Povey is congratulated by Wokingham Council Leader David Lee.

CONSERVATIVES in Woodley were celebrating last night after holding on to town and borough council seats following a by-election.

Two places on Woodley Town Council and a seat representing Woodley on Wokingham Borough Council were up for grabs.

On the town council, Nicholas Cox narrowly beat his Lib Dem rival Patrick Ciaran Power by 255 votes to 247 in Coronation Central Ward.

In Coronation East Ward, Conservative candidate Tom Barker won with 639 votes over his nearest rival Mark Thomas (Lib Dem) on 380.

Contesting the Borough Council seat were Coling Lawley (Lib Dem) Kate Povey (Conservative) and Dr Amy Thornton (UKIP)

Mrs Povey won with 850 votes over Mr Lawley on 675 votes and Dr Thornton on 74 votes.

The by-elections were called when councillors Audrey Choules and Patti Sherratt stepped down last month as they are leaving the Woodley area.

Cllr Sherratt held a town and borough council seat.

Victorious borough council candidate Kate Povey said: "I would like to thank my team for the immense effort to get me here today. It really has been a team effort. I would also like to thank the Liberal Democrats and UKIP for a hard fought campaign.

I look forward to taking my seat and representing the people of my ward at borough level.”
