A new chapter
By Annabel Williams
United: (left to right) Reverend dan Tyndall, churchwardens Peter Stratton, Barbara Kendall, Michael Crosbie, Sonia Higgs and Richard Purkiss, Bishop of Reading Stephen Cottrell, and churchwarden Bridget Cumming-Bruce.
A TRIO of churches has united to welcome a new leader and experience “the beginning of a new chapter”.
Reverend Daniel Tyndall has been made priest-in-charge of St Peter’s and St John’s, both in Caversham, and St Margaret’s in Mapledurham.
Mr Tyndall, who is married with two children, joins the parishes after spending seven years at St Nicholas Church in Earley.
He replaces Canon Richard Kingsbury, who retired in September last year. At a ceremony at St Peter’s Church, attended by members of the congregations from all three places of worship, Bishop of Reading, Stephen Cottrell, called Mr Tyndall’s installation “the beginning of a new chapter”.
The bishop then read what members of the St Peter’s congregation had written in their statement of what they wanted from a new vicar.
Bishop Cottrell said: “They said 'we want to develop new and relevant ways to make the gospel known to those who have not heard.
"To make this vision a reality, we want to join the churches of St Peter’s, St Margaret’s and St John’s together in the common purpose of growing the congregation of God both numerically and spiritually.’
“So no pressure there, Dan, that’s all you have to do!”
Bishop Cottrell paid tribute to Mr Tyndall’s “track record of what he has done elsewhere” and added: “Brothers and sisters, he has good things in store for this church and it begins now.”
