AN INFANT school had more than usual to be thankful for at its harvest festival after winning two gold awards.
All Saints Infant School in Downshire Square, Coley, has won both a Reading in Bloom award and an Artsmark award.
Assistant headteacher Helen Edwards said: “We are thrilled to have been given the gold Artsmark again. We won one in 2005 and they last for three years, so we had to re-apply. We worked very hard to get it again.
“We have continued to keep art going with a high profile, both within the curriculum and doing extra things as well. All the assistants run a lunchtime club and many are arts based. We have also had a visiting artist, musicians and actors.
“We have a weekly Golden Time, when we reward the children’s good behaviour by letting them choose from lots of different arts activities. Art helps with their social skills and boosts their achievements in other areas.”
The Artsmark is awarded by the Arts Council England to recognise schools with a high level of provision in the arts. All Saints also won a gold Reading in Bloom environmental award in the infant schools category.
The school held its harvest festival on Friday in nearby All Saints Church, accompanied by organist Graham Ireland. The children used their dramatic skills to perform the story of the little red hen and also made costumes and sang hymns.
Father Nicholas Cheeseman said: “It’s always lovely to have the school services here. The children like making themselves at home in the church.”
