A DRIVER had to be cut free from his car after ploughing into a signpost in Southcote.

Firefighters were called to Circuit Lane when the man, in his 50s, lost control of his Ford Escort as he drove towards Reading and crashed into the electrical road sign in a shower of sparks yesterday afternoon.

Firecrews from Dee Road and Whitley Wood arrived at the scene at around 4.30pm and had to work cautiously because of live electricity cables while spending around an hour freeing the victim. The man was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital with serious back and neck injuries.
