Liz Wild helping out on an Earley Environmental Group 'bug hunt'

AN ENTHUSIASTIC group of conservationists, environmentalists and wildlife experts has seen its hard work rewarded.

Earley Environmental Group (EEG), which runs workshops, holds talks and collects information on wildlife, has only been going since 2005 but has won the prestigious Dorothy Morley Conservation Award. The prize, worth £500, is awarded by the Berks, Bucks and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT).

Sheila Crowson from EEG said: “The prize should enable us to provide boards and leaflets to better inform the local community about their natural environment, plant material and the purchase of environmental education material to use with local children.”

She said the judges were impressed by the group’s work improving wildlife habitats at Maiden Erlegh Nature Reserve, their community involvement including walks, talks, website and newsletter, and their practical impact through things like birdbox building.

The presentation takes place at their base at the Interpretation Centre in Instow Road next Saturday.

EEG’s next event is hedgehog-home building sessions on Saturday, October 13, 2-4pm at the Interpretation Centre.

No expertise is needed, and everyone is welcome – there is a small donation required to cover the cost of materials.

- WAITROSE in Woodley is splitting £1,000 between three charities as part of its 'community matters’ initiative which runs until October 25. EEG is one of the nominated charities, and as customers pass through the till they can vote for their favourite charity by dropping tokens in a drum. The money will be shared out according to the votes each charity gets. Ms Crowson said: “As we have no income from membership, the chance to receive funds from Waitrose will be greatly welcomed and enable us to afford many things on our wish list, including equipment for use by children, plants for the local environment, production of information leaflets on walks, and hire of venues for talks, to name but a few. So when you next shop at Waitrose in Woodley, please vote for us.”

The other charities are the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Thames Valley Air Ambulance.

Great to hear about this, EEG do fantastic work.

Though I'd say the MS society and Air Ambulance should probably be higher priorities for charity money, let's face it.
