The community garden open day

A COMMUNITY garden in Katesgrove welcomed around 60 people for a fun day.

The Common Ground Community Garden in Silver Street was created on disused ground by local activists in May 2007. The gardeners are now in talks with Reading Borough Council to find a site for a permanent garden.

Stuart Melvin, a member of Reading Grassroots Action which worked on the garden, said: “Thank you to everyone who came. I think it was very good, very successful.

“It was a nice end to the current project and sets us up well to pursue the legal garden.”

Two bands played at the event on September 6, The King Blues, who played at Reading Festival on Saturday this year, and Babar Luck.

The site in Silver Street, behind the former Women’s Information Centre, had been left unused due to problems with the unstable terraced buildings.

Two are owned by the council, but it has not been clear who is responsible for the others, holding up demolition or redevelopment.

If the Silver Street site cannot be kept as a garden, sites in Southampton Street and Elgar Road may be used.
