Salter: Rebel MPs 'delusional'

LABOUR rebels should keep their grumbles about Gordon Brown to themselves, says Martin Salter.
The Reading West MP described his Slough counterpart Fiona Mactaggart and her fellow Brown-baiters as “at best misguided and at worst delusional”.
Ms Mactaggart, a former Home Office minister, told the BBC’s Politics Show at the weekend: “I think we should give someone else a chance to take over.”
She is one of more than 10 rebel Labour MPs calling for a leadership contest, a move which has cost some of them Government jobs. The most high profile of the rebels to break cover so far is Scotland Office minister David Cairns who promptly resigned on Tuesday.
Mr Salter said: “Labour has a mandate for a full Parliament and has global economic problems to deal with. We shouldn’t be wasting our time with internal self-indulgence, the British people want us to lead the country through this difficult time.”
While Slough’s Mayor and council leader backed their MP this week and said the Labour Party needs a contest to end the speculation over Mr Brown’s future, Reading Borough Council leader Jo Lovelock said: “The Government needs to be focusing on issues that matter, like rising energy and food costs, we don’t need the distractions that are around at the moment.”
