FORMER Reading football manager Mark McGhee presided over a successful fundraising evening for a charity which helps underprivileged children in Africa.
Mr McGhee, who steered the Royals into the old First Division in 1994 and now manages Motherwell in the Scottish Premier League, was master of ceremonies at an event which raised £4,300 for the Kenya Children’s Centres.
Set up in 1999, the charity was supported by Bernard Goodall, a former Reading player who died in January 2005.
After his death, widow Gay Goodall continued fundraising for the cause and organised the event at the Wallingford Corn Exchange.
The money will be put towards supporting destitute orphan girls who live near Nairobi by providing them with secure accommodation and medical centres.
The charity, which has already built The Thika Centre for Good Fortune for 12 young orphaned girls north of Nairobi, has now secured planning permission for another new centre to rescue another 120 girls, which will be named after Mr Goodall.
