A GIANT stick of rhubarb, a pumpkin that wouldn’t shame Cinderella and an enormous sunflower were among the eye-catching exhibits at the 46th Southcote Gardeners’ Association annual show.
Nearly 450 entries from gardeners aged from around eight to 70 plus were submitted in 120 classes including vegetables, giant vegetables, pot plants, flowers, floral art, art, photography, handicrafts, preserves, baking and a novice class.
Ken Sherry, who has been the show chairman for 10 years but is now stepping down because he plans to move away from the area, said: “All the exhibitors did incredibly well considering how poor the summer has been. Most members have allotments at the Lower Southcote site in Brunel Road, next to the Holy Brook, which has been incredibly high this year.
“The quality of the exhibits was very high and the judges were very pleased.”
Nearly 100 people attended the event. Six judges awarded the prizes, including a representative from the Women’s Institute and one from the South Reading Camera Club. The Arthur Henderson Memorial Cup for the best exhibit in show was won by John Clayton.
The society is believed to have been founded in the 1940s as part of the wartime 'Dig for Victory’ campaign.
