Smoke alarm saves woman's life
By Annabel Williams
A WOMAN was saved by her smoke alarm after fire broke out in the kitchen of her home this morning.
The unnamed woman was woken just before 2.50am by the device, and went downstairs to find her kitchen ablaze.
She escaped unharmed but watch manager Mark Coleman, of Dee Road fire station in Tilehurst, says the outcome could have been “very different” had the woman not had a working smoke alarm.
He also praised her quick thinking in closing her kitchen door before she got out of the house, in Bennetts Lane, Trash Green, an action which saved other rooms from damage.
The woman alerted a neighbour, who called the fire brigade.
The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
